DANCE STYLE: HIP HOP

Marty was born in Conway, South Carolinaand he has been dancing since he was 10 years old. His parents exposed him to many different hobbies when he was young and his mother wanted him to try dance, saying if he didn’t like it he never had to go back. Well, when Marty discovered it was him and six girls in the class . . . Let’s just say, he decided he should definitely go back. Marty credits his love of dance to his teacher, Mira Fox-Lamendola. His training with Mira included all disciplines of dance as well as training in gymnastics, which led to him receiving the “Bart Conner Gymnastics Award” at one competition. He also sites Mikhail Baryshnikov as a huge inspiration to him. He still remembers seeing “White Nights,” at age 14, and watching the contrasts between Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines but noticing how they molded together to create the “art” of dance. He remembers thinking the coolest thing was when Baryshnikov did 13 turns for 13 rubles. The movie inspired Marty so much that he choreographed his own competition solo that year and titled it “White Night.” While growing up, he attended many dance related events, including many conventions and competitions, he also played junior varsity and varsity baseball, even considering a professional baseball career at one point. However, when his baseball coach made him choose one or the other his Sophomore year of high school, he decided his odds would be better in dance.

So when he was 16, he moved to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and started his professional career in a new show, which had it’s own 2,000 seat theater, called “Boots, Boogie & Blues” produced by Opryland. After working there for two years, he booked a contract with Celebrity Cruise Lines on The Mercury, where he toured the Caribbean for three months, then he relocated to the west coast for a six month run through Alaska. After that, he moved home for approximately two months and prepared to make the move to Los Angeles to further his professional dance career. Now, after working in numerous industrial shows, dancing on stage with The Pussycat Dolls and the MTV Video Music Awards with N SYNC, commercials for such notable brands as OreoPepsi, and Honda, a stint as the Joe Boxer guy in a series of commercialsfor K-mart, and appearances on television series such as “Providence,” “American Dreams,” “The Bernie Mac Show,” “Boston Public” and “7thHeaven,” and several feature films such as “Bring It On: All or Nothing” and “Black Knight,”including a featured role in “You Got Served,” there’s no turning him back now. Marty credits the many amazing choreographers and mentors that he has worked with over the years, such as Jerry EvansJoseph MaloneChonique & LisetteDave ScottBrian FriedmanRobin Antinand Wade Robson, for developing his skills to the level they are today. His busy schedule includes many dance projects all over the world, including Beijing, ChinaCosta Rica and El Salvador, plus his work as a master teacher and choreographer. We have seen Marty grow tremendously as a performer and educator since he first began with us and are so very happy he is a part of the Tremaine family. His class is not to be missed!
