Soooooooo......
When JOE TREMAINE's assistant wrote to me asking if I would be the Joe Tremaine Entertainer of the Year.... I thought, "I'll do anything for Joe - even bear his children." But where, when, who, etc.... and hopefully I'll be working - (which I was supposed to be doing - but that's about me and this is about our Joe!!!) Our Joe my a## - the World's Joe (explanation to come).
My posse and I figured out all the logistics and ramifications (really my dear!!!) You know, the film, the number of appearances, what to wear, may I say any "bad" words, may I carry on the way I do on the stage, is this black tie and, oh yes, you said something about TV on Thursday morning - what time???!!! 6:00am!!! That means up at 3:30 - oh well, I'll just laminate my face and sleep on my back.
On Wednesday morning Mrs. Alexander Graham Bell called me at 4:00am and in a mechanical voice said, "the time is 4:00 am Wednesday morning Pacific Daylight Time" - which is phone code for "Move it, bitch." I do rather well in these circumstances because the phone doesn't ring, and it's too early for music or TV and especially vocalizing or goofing off because I must beat myself into shape - Paint the picture on my face - fold, crimp, staple, shove and cram myself into my clothes - finish putting the things I forgot about in the corners of the suitcases which are too full anyway.
6:00 my guys, RENE REYES and SHANE ROSAMONIA, better known as my posse, arrive and our driver stowed our bags into the limo.
Our plane left for Orlando, Florida, on time and I was off on a wonderful adventure that only Joe Tremaine could provide.
We arrived in Orlando on time (honest) and LYNN GIVENS, Joe's beautiful and talented Girl Friday (a delight) met us with security people and hotel aides (I felt like a rock star). We chatted in the car and arrived at our huge and beautifully cool hotel.
You know what it's like on the eighth of July in Florida - it's so humid it's like swimming in cosomme.
The doors opened and we were in the world of "Joe Tremaine's Competitions Convention!!!"
I was stunned by the amount of beautiful lovely young people - there must have been two thousand eager, talented joyful dancers swarming, laughing, stretching, taking class, competing, being taught and judged.
This was Wednesday - two days before "the Big Show."
Thursday July nine - 3:00 am.
I woke before the operator rang and started getting in the mood for the 6:00 am newscast we were to do. Joe met me at the elevator, God he's sweet, and charming and he's sucha hoot!!! I thanked him for the beautiful suite, the glorious flowers, the complete carte blanche of the hotel - and then Joe and I were "Live from Orlando, Florida, it's The Daily Buzz." Fortunately the interviewers knew who we were and what we did - Joe is such a Super Star there, not only because of the first class exposition of his organization, but all these wonderful people stimulate the economy!!!
The Big Day Friday July 10th 2:00 pm.
We were taken backstage of the convention hall where all the contestants, teachers, mothers and friends were there to meet and greet Joe and Mitzi, ask questions, take pictures. We'd give advice, consul, laugh, have fun, show off (that's me) and relax - I never had a better time just breathing the air of all this young talent.
7:00 July 10th Black Tie Gala.
Rene zipped me into my aqua and coral chiffon gown that BOB MACKIE made for me for the occasion.
I was really excited to see the dancing!!! You see, I was one of the competition judges, along with CHITA RIVERA's darling daughter LISA MORDENTE and the musical arranger and conductor for American Idol MICHAEL ORLAND.
Joe was introduced voice over and when he came on stage, the entire audience stood and cheered - my heart was pounding with joy - the people adore him - he was fun - and oh, I don't know how to say this, but he was Joe Tremaine and that's the best anyone can say about anyone!!! The one and only.
The dancing was almost impossible to judge. It was superb - it was hard, hard, hard to choose. When the final prize was given, we felt thrilled at having had a part in such a fabulous event. When Joe introduced me, I was almost in tears - because I said that when I was at my best, when I danced the best from my middle teens to middle thirties, I could never do the things some of these dancers could do - we were just not taught this kind of technique - Joe agreed - and anyone reading this who isn't dancing right now knows what I mean - but thank God we have Joe, and his competition conventions and teaching will keep dancing where it should be - before our eyes and in our hearts.
I'm proud to be a friend of his, and I'm proud to say I'm a dancer.
Remember - you are unique!
I love you
and
I thank you...
