IAN CARNEY
Dance Styles: BALLET, MODERN
Dancer, Educator, Choreographer
Ian was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, but raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He began taking classes at age four from his mother, Diane Carney at her studio and later took classes from Harvey Hysell. Later, after seeing, Valeri Panov of the Kirov Ballet perform live, he knew he wanted to be a dancer. He continued his studies as a scholarship student with David Howard in New York City, and Devon Carney of the Boston Ballet. Ian also danced at the Youth American Grand Prix in New York and Mexico. Then he graduated from Tulane University with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature while continuing to perform with Ballet Hysell in New Orleans. He joined the Montgomery Ballet with his wife Eleanor in 1996. Ian has danced principal roles in Coppelia, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Scheherazade, Petrouchka, and Les Sylphides, to name a few. He also danced the lead role in Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp’s musical hit "Movin’ Out" on Broadway and in the first national company, along with being the dance captain for two years. He has also guested extensively across the United States as dancer, teacher and choreographer, including teaching at Steps on Broadway. We are excited to have Ian on our team.
