COLBY SHINN
Dance Styles: JAZZ
Dancer, Choreographer & Educator

Colby was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, and has been dancing since the age of four. He was born into a dance family. His grandmother, Mary Lou Sheffield Noletto, has been a studio owner for more than 65 years, and his mother, Celi Shinn, who is a former professional dancer and an award winning dance educator. Growing up around the dance studio and being inquisitive and creative, Colby watched the older dancers in the studio, mimicked them and tried to create new things from what he had seen. He credits his mother and his aunt, Theresa Hutchins, for his knowledge of dance technique, performance skills and for nurturing him to be the best dancer he could possibly be. This training allowed him to become the only dancer to ever hold all three Tremaine Dancer of the Year (DOTY) titles: Jr. DOTY - 1995-96, Teen DOTY - 2001-02 and Sr. DOTY - 2003-04. In addition to his Tremaine titles and being Joe Tremaine’s dance assistant, he is an award winning choreographer, has won seven national titles with various dance organizations, was chosen as the winner of Debbie Allen’s FAME-US Challenge by Disney’s Raven Symone, and won Dance Spirit Magazine’s "Best Choreography" Competition to choreograph for pop/dance recording artist Lauren Hildebrandt. Colby has worked and choreographed for major schools such as Auburn University and the University of South Alabama, as well as being an international master teacher and choreographer, who has performed in front of superstars including Liza Minnelli, Dick Van Dyke, Chita Rivera, Mitzi Gaynor, Florence Henderson and Jennifer Holliday. He has also appeared on television dancing on America’s Junior Miss National Finals and on ESPN with Paula Abdul. In addition, he has performed at the Professional Dancers Society 22nd Annual Gypsy Awards in Hollywood honoring Mary Tyler Moore, The Michael Awards in New York City, the Jazz Dance World Congress in Chicago and as a guest soloist for DRA at "Dancing for Life in Bryant Park." Colby says, even from a very young age, dance was always something that he was very driven by and passionate about, so it was only natural that he chose it as a career path. We have literally seen him grow up and are extremely excited to now have him as one of our faculty members.
