BRITTANY SONNIER

New Iberia Dance & Gymnastics

BIO 2005:

I am 21 years old and attending college at the University of Louisiana majoring in Business Management. I have been living in Lafayette, Louisiana for seven years. During high school I was on the St. Thomas More dance team. We competed at the Universal Dance Association National Competition and were National Champions in the Pom and Jazz divisions in 2000 and Champions in Pom in 2001 and 2002. For the past year I was on the Rajun Jazz Dance Team for the University of Louisiana where we performed for all athletic events and placed top ten at UDA Nationals. I have recently discovered a new passion for latin dancing, salsa, and salsa casino in particular. I teach salsa at a local jazz and blues club and partake in salsa as much as possible. I currently dance four days a week studying ballet, lyrical, jazz and hip hop, and teach ballet at the Jill Listi Dance Studio in Lafayette, Louisiana. I also teach jazz and tap at the Hebert Dancentre in Opelousas,Louisiana, and at Muriel's Dance Center in New Iberia, Louisiana. Being Tremaine Teen Dancer of the Year was the best experience of my life. It motivated me in the most positive way to inspire young dancers and to be an encouraging role model. Being on tour with such a tremendous group of dancers gave me an unprecedented confidence, enabling me to accomplish great things with hard work and determination. After being Dancer of the Year, I received scholarships to the Edge, and the Performing Arts Center in Los Angelas, and to Broadway Dance Center in New York, where I took the opportunity to study for two weeks at each studio. In the future, I plan to pursue a dance career after receiving my bachelor's degree in 2006.
